Meet The Team: Lauren K, Lead Utility Surveyor
Have you ever thought about a career change? Lead utility surveyor Lauren did just that. Lauren has been a part of Kemp since 2016, marking an impressive nine years with the company. Coming from a completely different career background, she embraced the challenge of learning on the job and has grown into an experienced, qualified and valued utility surveyor.
Lauren enjoys working outdoors and exploring different areas of the Southwest, often visiting beautiful locations she might not have seen otherwise. She also appreciates the investigative aspect of utility surveying, which combines physical and mental work. Each site presents its own challenges, keeping the job engaging and dynamic.
Due to the variety of sites, no two days are the same. Most days begin at the office before traveling as a team to the site. There, the team lifts inspection covers and manholes to trace and mark out all detectable underground services. Using Electromagnetic Locators and Ground Penetrating Radar, they identify any additional buried utilities. Survey equipment is then used to collect data, which is processed back at the office.
One of Lauren’s standout projects so far has been working with Costain on the A30 project. This role introduced changes to her day-to-day responsibilities and provided her with greater responsibility.
And if she wasn’t surveying? Lauren has always dreamt of being a full-time potter and having her own studio. Outside of work, Lauren spends her time doing pottery and enjoys throwing. She also loves being outdoors, particularly at the beach, and swims in the sea year-round. If Lauren could go anywhere in the world she would choose to go skiing in Niseko, Japan, drawn to its serene atmosphere and the wilder terrain compared to European resorts.
