Meet The Team: Liv, Graduate Utility Surveyor
We recently caught up with one of our graduate surveyors, Liv, to discuss her transition from the classroom to site and her advice for those aspiring to enter the utility surveying profession.
Liv's journey into surveying began during her time at university. "I attended an external lecture on the science behind near-surface geophysics and absolutely loved the idea," she recalls. This passion led her to take on an internship with the company that led the lecture. “After the internship, I fell in love with surveying and knew it was exactly what I wanted to do!”
Liv studied Renewable Energy Engineering at the University of Exeter's Cornwall campus, where she specialised in geotechnical surveying for her dissertation. Her university education has provided a strong foundation in surveying and geophysics, and Liv is now enjoying learning the ropes of utility surveying.
When asked about her favourite aspect of working at Kemps, Liv said, “I absolutely love working outside and getting to see so many parts of Cornwall that I wouldn't normally see. I am also so grateful to be working with such a lovely team of people.”
And as for what a typical day looks like, Liv explains, “Every day is different! It’s impossible to describe a ‘typical day’ as each day brings something new to see and learn.”
For other graduates looking to start a career in surveying, Liv offers practical advice: “Get some experience to make sure you love it, and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty!”
Looking ahead, Liv is keen on specialising in surveying for potential geothermal energy sites, making renewable energy options more accessible. However, if she wasn’t in utility surveying, she’d ideally like to own her own sandwich and surf shop along the coast, aptly named "The One Sandwich Sandwich Shop."
In her free time, Liv enjoys anything related to the sea and loves winding down at the pub for a cheeky pint and a boogie. “If I could travel anywhere in the world, I’d go to the bottom of the Mariana Trench or inside a volcano,” she adds, sharing her love for all things geological.
